Transport and communication

Małopolska has good transport infrastructure, with a dense system of main roads (57.39 km/100 km2) and the overall density of roads of 143.9 km/100 km2


The region’s network of roads consists of the following:

  • A4 Motorway (Kraków - Katowice),
  • 958 km of national roads,
  • 1,368 km of regional roads,
  • 6,425 km of local poviat roads.

The territory of the region is crossed by three international transport routes: E40 (No.4) Dresden-Berlin-Kraków-Lviv-Kiev, E77 (No.7) Gdańsk-Chyżne-Budapest and E462 (No.96) Głogoczów-Bielsko-Biała-Cieszyn-Ostrava.


Moreover there are 10 border crossings to Slovakia along Poland’s southern border.


The International Kraków-Balice Airport is the second largest airport in Poland. It is characterised by a very high dynamics of growth in the number of passengers. In 2007 it handled over 3.1 million passengers and in 2010 2,5-2,7 million.

At present, the Balice Airport operates direct connections with 52 European cities (18 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Hungary, Great Britain, Italy). Moreover the airport offers connections (via Warsaw) with Chicago (USA), New York (USA) and Tel Aviv (Israel).
The essential function of the Cargo Terminal in Balice is the forwarding and storage of goods transported by air in international and domestic trade. Its annual capacity is 13 000 tonnes.
